The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission was established by coastal and fishing States of the western and central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) to ensure, through effective management, the long-term conservation and sustainable use of highly migratory fish stocks in the WCPO.
The establishment of the Commission, which held its first meeting at Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), in December 2004, provides a mechanism for the coordination of conservation measures for highly migratory fish stocks throughout their range.
Pohnpei is the largest and highest island in the FSM. Surrounded largely by rich mangrove forests, Pohnpei’s jagged coastline is intersected by numerous channels that carry nutrients into the vast lagoon. These nutrients attract marine life and make Pohnpei one of the most varied marine environments in Micronesia.
